Cons: it's impossible
HORRIBLE!! YOU HAVE TO READ SHAKESPEARE!!!
TYRRELL IS OLD AND MEAN
i went to the first day and have never had a worse class
Cons: Hard exams.
Hard grader.
Talks at you quickly, leaving you wondering whats important to take note of.
Is intimidating when asking a question, not a very people friendly type of guy.
If you're looking for an easy IAH class, don't pick this one. This has easily become my most difficult class this semester, and I took it to be a blow-off one. This prof expects you to know the material as well as he does, and he's been studying it his entire life.
If you ask him for help, he will help you
Cons: Lots of reading and writing
Hard Grader
Honestly Tyrrell is a great prof. At first i didnt like him but that was my fault. I've noticed that the people that dont like him or think hes a bad prof are the ones that don't listen to him in class or dont even come to class. If you are looking for an easy IAH this isnt it, but if you like greek culture and history hes a very good prof. If you're will to go to class and listen you will do well. His tests are mostly essays and he gives you the topics they will be on a week before exams, and basically if you write what he told you in class, you dont even have to spin his words or give your own input, you will get high marks. That being said if you try to bullshit him and have no knowledge of the subject he won't even hesitate to give you a 0.
So overall i loved him his lectures are interesting and very informative. Theres one term paper and no restrictions on what you can write as long as it has something to do with greek culture/history. He doesnt care about attendance or in his words how you do in this class but is absolutely willing to help anyone that asks. Hes pretty damn funny too.
Cons: There is a lot of material and he moves very quickly. Grades very hard and will not talk to you about improving grades
He explains things thoroughly.
He is very comical.
Enjoyable Class.
Cons: He sometimes gets of track with lectures.
I enjoy this class and Prof. Tyrrell.
Develop relationships with your classmates and form study groups. Find the support you need in them. You're all in the same boat and are looking for the same thing. Go to every class if you don't do consistently well on the quizzes. You will be just fine. Keep pluggin' along.
I really liked Prof. Tyrrell. He was really interesting and knew his way around the subject so well. You have to do all of the reading in the class to succeed but he tried to space it out pretty well.
All of the exams are essays. There are identification, short answer and essay questions. He gives you a list to choose from so you don't have to do them all. He will also tell you that he doesn't give out study guides, but he actually does. They are pretty much exactly what is on the exam.
If you have never had a prof that lectures with out the board or a power point, this might be a hard class for you but I thought it was useful. He talks A LOT and its all really interesting. He loves to answer questions, as long as they aren't stupid.
I got a 97% in the class. What helped was doing all of the reading, taking great notes, going to class everyday and studying with a group of people in the class. Sometimes its hard to catch everything in the lectures and having other peoples notes really helps out!!
Although he blatantly states that he doesn't care if you learn it or not, he's one of my favorite/most memorable professors I've had in 4 years at MSU.
This is not a blow- off class, or a good 4 credit elective if you are taking other demanding courses.
